Animal Medical Services

We know the issue of pain management is of great concern to pet owners today. As in human medicine, we have a variety of medications and complimentary therapies available to manage your pet’s pain.

Cases that benefit from pain management:

  • both before and after surgery
  • in the event of trauma/wound therapy
  • disease management, such as arthritis, cancer, nerve damage.

We would be pleased to discuss the options available to you and your pet under any of the above circumstances.

Tranquilization/Sedation/Anxiety Medications

Tranquilization or sedation is used to calm an animal under various conditions. The animal remains awake or may ‘sleep’ but is easily aroused when stimulated. Pet owners frequently request sedation for their animals during travel, thunderstorms, fireworks, etc. We have both homeopathic/natural products that are quite effective and more potent prescription medications. Our goal is not to “knock out” your pet, but to use just the right amount of medication to keep your pet calm and happy. Sedation and tranquilization are not without risk and each animal should be assessed prior to dispensing these medicines.

What precautions/measures do you take so my pet doesn’t feel pain related to surgery/injury/infection/chronic disease?

Your pet’s comfort is a priority for us. Using our knowledge of pain medication and pain relief strategies, we do everything we can to prevent and manage your pet’s pain under all circumstances.

By taking a proactive approach to pain management, we try to stop pain before it starts. For ongoing pain management, we often use multiple medications, which allows us to use lower doses, but get a synergistic effect and better pain control than a high dose of just one drug.

Local anesthetics and topical treatments are great alternatives for pets who do not tolerate oral medications as well. We also offer nutritional supplements, acupuncture and chiropractic services, which can help control pain in some pets. We will tailor a pain management plan to your pet’s medical condition and individual needs.
